There has been an explosion of new restaurants in Calgary over the past few years. Some of the additions to our food scene have been long overdue while others...let's just say they haven't made the impact they had hoped. In either case one thing is for sure...you don't get treated like the food writers and well known critics in the city. This section is designed to give you the chance to review my favorite picks and comment on your experiences for the benefit, and enjoyment of others.
The selections on this website are by no means an exhaustive list. There are many more great spots than I have had time to write about, which is why there is a section for you to add your reviews, good, bad...or ugly. One thing to keep in mind as you begin writing about a business is that repeated tastings are best. Everyone has an off night and the goal of this site is not to nitpick or trash people's livelihood. Generally speaking, every restaurant I have written about is somewhere I have eaten more than once. In some places I am a regular so it is impossible for me to hide but their food is awesome so I keep going back!
Why am I doing this? It's out of frustration. In general, reviews provide you, the customer, with zero value if a food critic announces their arrival at every meal and this is what most food writers do. I think all people should be treated the same, especially when you are in a fine dining establishment. This is a simple concept yet I don’t see food writers employing a methodology that is helpful for the consumer. How many of you have been treated like a famous food critic?
Finally, I have tremendous respect for the men and women who work away in kitchens and the servers who put up with us in their dining rooms. Writing about poor restaurant experiences does not make sense to me unless it is a repeated experience or was soooo bad you have to share it. Though I have had my fair share of bad meals I have no interest in highlighting them. Having said that, I have no patience for being over charged, under served, or feeling hungry after an expensive dinner. These are some of the instances that should be highlighted to save other diners the pain of a wasted evening and the feeling of being ripped off.
